Two ways to reach developers, built differently. Here's an honest look at both, written by the Carbon team.
Carbon Ads places one native ad (a small image and a line of text) on about 350 active, hand-picked websites read by developers and the builders around them (designers, founders, people building with AI tools), matched to the page. daily.dev Ads is a managed monthly plan inside daily.dev, a news feed for developers, targeted by each reader's tech stack and seniority.
Pick Carbon if you want your brand on many sites developers already trust, in one booking, planned and run with our client services team. Pick daily.dev for targeting by tech stack and seniority inside its platform. You can run both.
Carbon is best for:
daily.dev is best for:
| Carbon Ads | daily.dev Ads | |
|---|---|---|
| Format | One native unit: Carbon Classic (image plus 100 characters) or Carbon Cover (interactive, select sites). Premium placements available. One ad per page, so it doesn't compete with other ads on the page | In-feed native ads, newsletter ads and sponsored content, per daily.dev's llms.txt. |
| Where ads show | ~350 active, curated developer and design sites: docs, dev tools, blogs, open source pages, in front of builders while they work | Inside daily.dev: the feed, the Digest and the homepage |
| Devices | Desktop, plus mobile on sites whose layout keeps the ad, so the ad always fits the page it's on | Not stated on daily.dev's advertiser pages |
| Audience | Developers, plus the designers and other builders around them | Developers |
| Scale | 250M+ impressions a month, enough reach to learn fast from one booking | One platform, by design |
| Targeting | Page context and site category. Country, OS and browser. No personal data needed | Tech stack, seniority, geography, keywords and topics followed, per daily.dev's Carbon comparison page |
| Pricing | $6 CPM (cost per thousand ad views) developer, $5 CPM creator. Baseline rate. Final quote depends on timing, targeting and volume. 1M impressions a month recommended. $5,000 a month minimum. We've run campaigns for years, and very small tests rarely reach enough developers to show whether it works. Pay per thousand views (CPM) across the network. A native pay-per-click option is also available. | Monthly plan (Starter, Growth, Scale), quoted per company. No public rate card, per daily.dev's pricing page |
| Measurement | Optional reporting pixel for click and view-through attribution. Most advertisers run without one, so you choose how much you measure | Conversion pixel with view-through attribution |
| Ad blockers | Acceptable Ads approved (shown to AdBlock Plus users who keep Acceptable Ads on), so you reach readers other ads miss | Native in-feed placements |
| Reporting | Real-time dashboard to see daily impressions, clicks and CTR by creative. Mid-campaign optimization meetings on some campaigns, so you can act on results while the campaign runs | Weekly reporting and engagement insights |
| How you buy | Planned and run with our client services team, who handle setup, launch and optimization with you. A real-time dashboard shows results as they come in. Goes live on your schedule, within minutes once creative is ready. | Managed. daily.dev's team runs it |
daily.dev has published several pages about Carbon. A few points are out of date.
Respected by maintainers.
A daily.dev guide to developer marketing platforms calls contextual networks, Carbon included, "Privacy-safe, inexpensive, respected by maintainers, and blind to who is reading." We'll take that. We recommend 1M impressions a month so a campaign reaches enough developers to learn from.
Targeting the page, not the person.
That's how Carbon reaches the right people. Because we curate the network, each site is picked for the developers and designers advertisers want to reach. And we do it without collecting personal or first-party data about readers. That's by design, for privacy. Of the 464 readers who answered our 2026 survey, 77% work as developers: full-stack, backend, frontend, mobile or DevOps.
“Self-serve marketplace.”
daily.dev's pricing page uses this label for Carbon. That's not how Carbon works today. Our client services team plans and runs campaigns with you. BuySellAds does still have an older self-serve tool, which is probably where the label comes from, but it's rarely used and we don't point advertisers to it.
Network size.
daily.dev's Carbon comparison page describes Carbon as "a hand-placed unit across a handful of independent tech and design sites." Carbon runs on about 350 active sites and serves 250M+ impressions a month. Many of those sites are the same blogs and resources daily.dev surfaces in its feed.
“Desktop-only.”
A daily.dev article on Carbon alternatives says this. Not quite. Carbon runs on mobile on some publisher sites. Each publisher decides whether the ad stays or drops at small screen sizes, based on their layout and the reading experience they want. If mobile reach matters to your campaign, ask us which sites keep the ad on mobile.
Managing the buys.
daily.dev's Carbon comparison page says Carbon and BuySellAds "leave you to manage the buys." This one isn't right. One Carbon booking covers the network, and a hands-on client services team plans, launches and optimizes the campaign with you. Client Services is the biggest team at our company, and many customers pick us for that human approach.

They reach developers at different moments. Carbon shows up while developers read docs and use tools. daily.dev shows up while they browse a news feed.
Want an inbox push too? BuySellAds runs sponsorships in independent developer newsletters alongside Carbon.
Carbon publishes $6 CPM for developers. Pay per thousand views (CPM) across the network. A native pay-per-click option is also available. daily.dev quotes each plan, so a direct comparison needs a daily.dev quote.
Carbon's minimum is $5,000 a month, and it recommends 1M impressions a month. daily.dev quotes each plan.
No. Carbon targets by page and site category, plus country, OS and browser.
Yes, on some sites. Each publisher decides whether the ad stays at small screen sizes. Ask us which sites keep the ad on mobile.
No. Carbon campaigns are planned and run with our client services team. An older self-serve tool still exists in the BuySellAds marketplace, but it's rarely used and we don't recommend it. Once a campaign is live, you can watch results in real time in the dashboard, and the team handles optimization with you.
Yes. They reach developers in different places.
